There are few things that will cause me to arise at 6:00 on a Saturday morning!  One of them is to attend a community garage sale in my own community.  My husband volunteered to drive the get-away car!  That means he drives up near to the items and then I jump out, have a good look, and then move on to the next address.  The early bird gets the worm in yard sale world!  And, it is a good idea to have lots of one dollar bills and to scan the entire area first before moving in to see certain things.  That way, you can key in on something you really like and not let time elapse. After all, when it is gone, it is gone!

My favorite stop in the neighborhood on Saturday was one street away.  This lady had gone to a great deal of work and she had many nice items.

I especially liked the bamboo stand that was priced at just $10.  I tried to think of a place for it in my home, but there really wasn’t anyplace, so I had to let it go.  It would have been great with rolled white terry cloth towels and baskets filled with good smelling soaps and perfumes in a bathroom.

Along the way I saw our friend and neighbor, Bill.  He really was not interested in the “Baby Bather,” but I asked him to pose and that is what he was near.  Thanks, Bill.

My friend, Becky, told me that she wants to make a wreath out of old sheet music.  I thought long and hard about getting this one for her, but it had lots of tears and when I looked closely, the pages not have come off the form easily in order to be put together again on another form.  It was just too rough for Becky.  Too bad!

This love seat was charming, but the owner wanted more than I wanted to spend.  I had to let it pass, too.

When I saw this mirror with the wood detail including feathers and flowers, I knew that I had to have it.  So, this mirror came home with me.

Through the years, I have found lots of pretty items at garage sales.  This original watercolor came home with me last week.  The artist is a member of an art guild in New England, or so the seller said.  I like it very much!

My favorite story is from Kentucky.  I had been looking for a crystal chandelier when I spotted one in a box at a yard sale.  When I asked how much it was, the owner said, “$6.00.”  I had prepared poorly that day and had only two one dollar bills and some twenty dollar bills.  It was early in the day and she had no change for a twenty.  I asked if she would keep it while I went for change and she said I could have it for “2.00.”  Too bad, but I left it at the house we sold five years ago.

Last year, I got this sweet little chair for Tabitha at our community yard sale.  It was a replacement for the child’s rocker that I bought but returned to the original owner after she had seller’s remorse.

I like this wire basket that is on top of one of my kitchen cabinets.  It came from a yard sale in Mississippi. At the time I bought it the basket was red….so I painted it bronze with a can of spray paint.

These sterling silver spoons with engraved “M” were so tarnished that the owner did not know what he had. I liked them for the shell design and had no idea they were monogrammed.  It was quite a treat to learn that I had bought sterling silver tea spoons engraved with the initial of my last name for .50 each.  The are resting below on one of the twelve white linen dinner napkins that are also monogrammed.  They came from a yard sale in Maryland.

I have a set of green majolica and a white urn that are also yard sale finds.  The orchid is a newer addition.

Next weekend, if the weather is nice, look for a neighborhood garage sale in your area.  You might come home with a real treasure.    Create and be happy!
