This week I chanced to have a conversation with a friend about his Eagle Scout project. I was so impressed with what he did that I want to share it with you. Everyone has a story and this young man has a wonderful one!

Thank you to Megan Prejean from KTRE for the article and the photos.

CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) -Robert Morrison, a 17-year-old Eagle Scout, spent several hours each day after school painting to create a unique brick wall mural. The brick wall was an empty canvas a month ago. Now, when motorists drive down historic Camp Street in Crockett they will see seven blues musicians painted on the side wall of Knox Furniture.

“There’s a lot of distortion in the images that we have to worry about; getting the right angle. It was definitely difficult,” Robert Morrison said.

Camp Street is significant for many reasons and was once a get away for many blues musicians.

“Camp street in Crockett has an amazing blues history. A lot of music, a lot of musicians came through Crockett,” Pipp Gillette, Houston County historical commission member, said.

The seven blues musicians depicted in the mural are Lightnin’ Hopkins, “Big Mama” Thornton, Frankie Lee Sims, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Texas Johnny Brown, “Blind” Lemon Jefferson, and “T-Bone” Walker. These artist are well known for their blues success, but Morrison said fame isn’t what he was trying to achieve when painting the historic icons.

Morrison said, “I’m not too big on people knowing I did it because the project wasn’t about me, it’s about helping the community, and just making some of the figures on the mural have a lasting history in the town.”

The young artist painted the mural as part of a community project to earn his Eagle Scouts badge and said he couldn’t do it without the help he received from friends, family, and Knox Furniture. He hopes his ambition and dedication will be an example for Boy Scouts and the community.

Robert will be entering Baylor University in the fall and he plans to pursue a career in medicine.  If this wonderful mural is any indication of what he can do when he sets his mind to a project, then I know there are some really BIG things in store for him.

Let’s take one more look at his mural!
